Friends of the Millis Public Library
                            April 2008
We welcome Pat Gillis, new member of our group.  Marie Rhyne, a former Millis resident, has retired to Maine.  She has contributed generously to the Friends.  Thank you.  We will miss you, Marie.  Kathy Manning, Treasurer, received correspondence from Corcoran Brokerage regarding a fundraising mission.  This will be tabled and discussed at a later date.

The Library Book Sale will be Saturday May 10 from 10-2 on the library grounds.  Prices were determined and publicity reviewed.  Diane Hubbard will coordinate a Bake Sale.  Laura Gaspa's Grade 5 Girl Scout Troop will assist the day of the sale.  Mary will get tables from St. Thomas Hall.  We are asking members who can donate their time the day of, or the afternoon before the sale to help us.

Michael Tougias' presentation was very well received.  It was recommended that we schedule him for an encore performance in April 2009, during National Library Week.

Much discussion focused on the Wine Tasting Evening at the newly remodeled and reopened Rossi's Restaurant.  Mark your calendar for Thursday, June 12 from 6-8 p.m.  Thank you Barbara LeBlanc for spearheading this event.  Tickets will be $25 per person.  There will be four wine selections and appetizers.  The cost for wine and appetizers from Rossi's is $14.  The Friends will make an $11 profit.  We are looking for flower donations and a live musician, harpist, pianist, etc.  Wine Tasting tickets will be available at the Book Sale.

Please join us at these two major events, the Book Sale on Saturday May 10, and the Winetasting June 12.

Our next meeting will be Monday June 2 at 6:30 pm in Dora's Room.

Respectfully,

Mary Alessi/n

Friends of the Millis Public Library

March 2008

The Friends are excited to sponsor an evening with Michael Tougias, Author of Ten Hours Until Dawn. Using slides of the boats, the men involved, and photos of the storm, Tougias will take his audience through this incredible night of rescue.  Please join us on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the library.

We welcome the Molloy family as new members.  Members present voted to fund $15 for the yearly tax exempt filing fee.  We also voted not to fund the JFK Museum and Library pass ($250) due to insufficient usage.  Discussion focused around the $480 bill to DK Net Design for the annual website hosting fee which includes support maintenance and content management system.  The group voted not to fund this next year.  We anticipated an initial fee but not an annual cost.

Kathy Manning, Treasurer, reported that our account total is smaller than last year.  We voted to split Michael Tougias’ fee of $300 with the library.

Members will be attending the April 8 Trustees Meeting to plan a joint sponsored Wine Tasting Party at Rossi's Restaurant for its grand reopening.

Our meeting ended at 7 p.m.  We enjoyed a most informative and pleasant hour with Beth Krimmel, Library Trustee, teaching us how to preserve antique papers and clothing.  Thank you, Beth!

The Friends will meet again on Monday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m.  Our agenda will include Wine Tasting plans, the Speed Read Program and a possible talk by Pat Clark on her recent trip to Africa.

Hope to see you then.

Please save your books for our Saturday, May 10 Book Sale.

Respectfully,

Mary Alessi

Friends of the Millis Library -- February 2008 Newsletter
The Friends met on Monday February 25, 2008 in Dora's Room.  With the absence of Kathy Manning, the Treasurer, there was no report.   Arthur Payne reported that local author, Michael Tougias, is available to speak on Wednesday, April 16.  He will discuss his book Ten Hours Until Dawn, the story of heroism and tragedy aboard a rescue ship Can Do during the Blizzard of '78.   A Friend's representative will attend the March 11 Trustees Meeting to further discuss fundraising possibilities.  One recommendation, well received by the group, is a winetasting party sponsored by the Friends, at Rossi's Restaurant, when it reopens in April.   Beth Krimmel, Library Trustee, will speak about "The Care and Preservation of Photographs, Paper and Textiles" on Monday March 24, at 7 p.m.  This presentation is immediately following the Friends next meeting.   At our January 25, 2008 meeting the Friends voted to pay $480 to D K Net Design for the annual website hosting fee, which includes e-mail, support maintenance and content management system.  A lengthy discussion ensued as to whether or not this would be a yearly expense.  Many members were uncomfortable about this cost, expecting it for the initial installation, but not yearly.   The Friends were also asked to fund $53.40 for four new books for the "Speed Read" program.  Much discussion focused around monthly expectations, location in the library, etc.  Carol Neeson will investigate how other towns manage this program.  We will discuss the Speed Read Program more in depth at the March meeting.  Hope to see you there, Monday March 24!   Respectfully,   Mary Alessi
